Originally one of the first forts built as a base of operations against the Seminole Indians during the American Indian Wars. Located along the Caloosahatchee River, it became the winter home for both Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. Fort Myers is also known as the City of Palms. The city is home to Southwest Florida’s International Airport, numerous higher education facilities, including Florida Gulf Coast University, Nova Southeastern University, and Hodges University, and Jetblue Park where the Boston Red Sox conduct their spring training. Fort Myers Beach attracts tourists and residents alike. Annual events include the annual American Sand Sculpting Championships, a pirate festival, a Christmas boat parade, New Years Eve fireworks, and Fourth of July fireworks.
